Alibaba's June-quarter results highlight cloud acceleration and stabilizing core e-commerce, positioning AI as the dominant long-term growth engine.

Alibaba Earnings Analysis & Cloud Acceleration

24th August 2026

Tibor Bokor

Alibaba (BABA) reported its June-quarter results, revealing a strong underlying operational story beneath headline figures. Surging AI demand continues to re-accelerate cloud infrastructure growth while core domestic retail metrics show clear signs of stabilization.

We view this print as a pivotal inflection point, directly addressing market concerns regarding AI capital expenditure returns and consumer macroeconomic drag.

Cloud Expansion & AI Infrastructure

  • Cloud Revenue & Margin Acceleration: Cloud computing revenue jumped 45% YoY, with expectations to reach ~50% growth in the September quarter. Cloud margins expanded significantly to 11.6%, up from 7.2% a year ago.
  • Scaling AI Revenue: AI-related revenue is on track to achieve a $10 billion annualized run-rate this quarter. Management reiterated its 2030 cloud revenue target of $100 billion, with potential upside as adoption accelerates.

Core Retail & Investment Loss Trajectory

  • Domestic E-Commerce Stabilization: Core Taobao/Tmall customer management revenue improved to +2% YoY when stripping out one-off subsidies, confirming that domestic retail operations are stabilizing rather than deteriorating.
  • Peaking AI Losses: Losses in the "AI Labs & Apps" segment—largely tied to Qwen AI development—reached RMB 13.8 billion. We expect these losses to peak and narrow to a stable RMB 11–12 billion per quarter.

Portfolio Position & Outlook

The quarterly results dismantle two primary bear arguments: macro-driven consumer weakness dragging down e-commerce, and unmonetized runaway AI capital spending.

Management guided to a sub-three-year payback period on AI infrastructure investments while losses plateau. With core retail solid and AI/cloud acting as the dominant growth driver, we remain confident in our positioning.

We believe investing in global equities creates long-term alpha.
